A Message from Pastor Loren about the League of Rural Churches

The Foundation of Danish Countryside Chapel

Good evening and welcome to the Danish Countryside Chapel. I’m Pastor Loren Christensen, and I'm delighted to have you join us as we embark on this journey together. Tonight, I want to share the story of our chapel, our mission, and the path that has brought us here.

Two years ago, we established the Danish Countryside Chapel, not just as a place of worship but as the headquarters for a broader mission. Our goal was to create a sanctuary for those who feel disconnected from traditional church settings. Over the past year and a half, we've shared around 130 sermons on YouTube, carefully curating the most impactful ones to reach a wider audience.

Our outreach extends beyond the chapel walls through our YouTube channel and our website, danishcountrysidechapel.org. We currently offer over 420 three-to-five-minute readings of "A Word from the Vine," ready for publication and seeking a home with a publisher. These resources are designed to provide spiritual nourishment and guidance to those who may not have access to a traditional church.

We created the chapel with a specific audience in mind: the "unchurched." These are individuals whose families may have once been churchgoers but have since drifted away. As the owner of the Danish Countryside Winery, I often marry and baptize people who recognize me as an ordained Lutheran pastor. I encourage them to find a church, yet many feel shy about attending. This reluctance challenges small, historic churches in our communities to survive.

Our chapel is located in the upper level of the winery, resembling a monastery with its serene environment. Here, I work and reflect, with a beautiful view of the vineyard that reminds me daily of our mission. This tranquil setting provides the perfect backdrop for our spiritual endeavors and daily reflections.

One of our most significant initiatives is the League of Rural Churches. This concept, developed over two years with Dr. Dennis Bielfeldt and Chris Meyer, aims to support churches struggling without pastors. Our mission is to offer hope and practical solutions to these communities, ensuring that they can continue to thrive and serve their congregations.

Addressing the Pastoral Crisis

I want to address a critical issue facing our small communities: the shortage of pastors. Despite some churches having adequate funds, they struggle to find pastoral leadership. This isn't due to a lack of effort from church associations but rather a systemic challenge that we must confront together.

The regional concept, where larger churches absorb smaller ones, has been a temporary solution. However, this often results in only a fraction of the original members transitioning to the new church, leading to a decline in overall church attendance. Small community churches close, their buildings fall into disrepair, and larger churches face the challenge of accommodating an influx of new members. This situation pushes some towards Evangelical movements, and I don't blame them. We've mismanaged our congregations, assuming pastors would always be available.

The reality is that becoming a pastor is expensive, requiring a Master of Divinity, which is almost another bachelor's degree. We need a sustainable solution. That's why I propose creating a Master of Ministry program. This 50-credit program would be more accessible, reducing the financial burden on aspiring pastors. As someone who has served multiple Lutheran denominations without a Master of Divinity, I advocate for this practical approach. My experience and academic record support the viability of a Master of Ministry as an alternative.

By implementing this program, we can ensure that our churches have the pastoral leadership they need to thrive. This approach will allow us to train pastors within our communities, ensuring they are deeply connected to the people they serve. It's a practical, sustainable solution that aligns with our mission to support and revitalize small community churches.

Empowering Local Communities

Now I would like to share our exciting plans for the League of Rural Churches and how we aim to empower local communities. Over the next year, I will be taking time off to visit church councils across Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Northern Missouri, and beyond. Our goal is to identify potential pastors within these communities and provide them with the necessary education through the Institute of Lutheran Theology in Brookings, South Dakota. Thanks to modern technology, this education can be both accessible and affordable.

We propose that a Master of Ministry should be sufficient for ordination, allowing churches to train their own pastors. This approach is similar to the military’s creation of warrant officers during times of need. Churches can support seminarians, monitor their progress, and ensure accountability. This model aligns with Martin Luther’s vision of managing the “kingdom of the left”—the practical aspects of church life—efficiently, so we can focus on worship and community.

Our aim is to foster cooperation among all denominations, supporting small churches in finding and training pastors. By paying for seminarians’ education, churches can alleviate the financial strain on new pastors, potentially providing housing and a manageable salary. This initiative ensures that small community churches can thrive, with locally trained pastors who understand and are invested in their communities.

I believe that by working together, we can create a sustainable future for our rural churches. This initiative is not just about filling pastoral positions; it’s about building strong, resilient communities that can support and uplift one another. Your involvement and support are crucial to the success of this mission.

Join the League of Rural Churches: A Transformative Mission

As I reflect on our mission to revitalize rural churches, I am filled with a profound sense of purpose and excitement. The League of Rural Churches is not just an initiative; it’s a movement designed to empower local communities and breathe new life into our cherished places of worship. Today, I invite you to be a part of this transformative journey.

Imagine a future where every small community church thrives, led by pastors who are deeply connected to the people they serve. Our Master of Ministry program is the cornerstone of this vision. It’s designed to cultivate local leadership, ensuring that our pastors are not only well-trained but also intimately familiar with the unique needs and strengths of their communities. This program is accessible and affordable, breaking down the barriers that have long prevented passionate individuals from answering their calling.

But we can’t do this alone. The success of our rural churches hinges on the active participation of community members like you. Your involvement is crucial, whether through volunteering, attending services, or supporting our initiatives. Together, we can build a strong, vibrant community where everyone feels a sense of belonging and purpose.

Sustainability is at the heart of our mission. We are committed to thoughtful financial planning and strategic outreach to ensure the long-term viability of our churches. Growth is not just about increasing numbers; it’s about deepening our faith and expanding our impact. By focusing on spiritual growth, we can create a community that thrives both individually and collectively.

Rural churches face unique challenges, from declining populations to limited resources. But with resilience and adaptability, we can overcome these obstacles. The League of Rural Churches is dedicated to finding innovative solutions and providing the support our communities need to flourish.

Now, more than ever, we need your support. Join us in this mission to revitalize our rural churches. Whether you feel a calling to pastoral leadership or want to support your local church in other ways, your involvement is vital. Stay connected with the Danish Countryside Chapel and the League of Rural Churches for updates, events, and opportunities to contribute. Spread the word and share this message with others who might be inspired to join our mission. Together, we can amplify our impact and bring hope to our communities.

Thank you for joining us here on our Danish Countryside Chapel blog. I hope my message has inspired you to act and support the vital work of revitalizing our rural churches. Remember, every small step makes a difference. Let’s continue to build a strong, faith-filled community together. Blessings to you all, and until next time, may you find peace and purpose in every step of your faith journey.
