A Word from the Vine No. 151: The Call to Unity - Beyond Being Right

Welcome, dear friends, to another episode of "A Word from the Vine." I'm Pastor Loren Christensen. Today, I want to address a topic that resonates with many of us: the desire to be right about everything. As Lutherans, and as Christians in general, we can sometimes become consumed with this need to prove ourselves right, to defend our theological positions, and to separate ourselves from others. But is this truly the essence of our faith?

Today, I want to draw our attention to a letter written by the apostle Paul to the Corinthians. In 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, Paul writes these words of wisdom: "I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment."

These words are a gentle reminder of the call to unity within the body of Christ. Paul emphasizes that our primary focus should be on the message of the Gospel, not on minor differences or theological debates. Our faith is not about being right at all costs, but about loving one another, sharing the good news, and spreading Christ's love to a world in need.

As Lutherans, we have a rich heritage and a distinct theological perspective. But let us remember that our identity is rooted in Christ, not in our doctrinal positions. Our calling is to find common ground with our brothers and sisters in Christ, to celebrate the diversity within the body of believers, and to work together for the advancement of God's kingdom.

In a world that is divided and hurting, we have a unique opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ through our unity. We can choose to rise above the need to be right and instead prioritize love, understanding, and collaboration. When we do so, we become a powerful witness to the transformative power of the Gospel.

So, dear friends, let us embrace this call to unity. Let us lay aside our divisions, our desire to prove ourselves right, and instead focus on the message of Christ's love and salvation. Together, as one body, let us spread this message to a world that desperately needs to experience the hope, peace, and joy found in Jesus.

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father, we humbly come before you, acknowledging our tendency to prioritize being right over love and unity. We ask for your forgiveness and guidance. Help us to shift our focus from minor differences to the essentials of our faith. Open our hearts to embrace unity, to celebrate diversity, and to work hand in hand for the advancement of your kingdom. May we be known not by our theological positions, but by our love for one another. In the name of Jesus, our Savior, we pray. Amen.
