A Word from the Vine No. 155: Cultivating a Willing Heart - David's Example of Obedience

Welcome, dear friends, to another episode of "A Word from the Vine." I'm Pastor Loren Christensen. Today, we continue our exploration of obeying God when we don't feel like it, focusing on the inspiring story of David. Let's turn our attention to 1 Samuel 24:1-7.

"As soon as Saul returned from following the Philistines, he was told, 'Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.' Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Wildgoats' Rocks. And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where there was a cave, and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost parts of the cave. And the men of David said to him, 'Here is the day of which the Lord said to you, "Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you."' Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul's robe. And afterward David's heart struck him because he had cut off a corner of Saul's robe. He said to his men, 'The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord's anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord's anointed.'"

David, a man after God's own heart, found himself in a situation where he had the opportunity to take revenge on Saul, who sought to harm him. With Saul unsuspecting and vulnerable, David's men urged him to seize the moment and eliminate his enemy. It would have been a moment of victory for David, a moment of satisfying his personal desires and self-preservation. But David's response reveals the depth of his character and his commitment to obeying God's commandments.

David's heart struck him for even cutting off a corner of Saul's robe. He recognized that Saul was the anointed of the Lord, and it was not his place to take matters into his own hands. Despite the pressures and temptations, David chose to honor God's anointed one and uphold righteousness over personal gain.

My friends, David's example teaches us that obeying God when we don't feel like it requires cultivating a willing heart. It means surrendering our desires for revenge, self-gratification, or personal gain in exchange for God's will and His commandments. It's about recognizing that God's ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts higher than our thoughts.

In our own lives, we face similar moments of decision. We may be tempted to take matters into our own hands, seeking retribution or pursuing our own interests. But let us remember the example of David and choose obedience over self-gratification.

Cultivating a willing heart starts with surrendering ourselves to God's authority and seeking His guidance through prayer and His Word. It means aligning our desires with His desires, trusting that His ways are ultimately for our good and His glory. It requires humility, self-control, and a constant reminder of God's faithfulness and love.

In our next episode, we will explore the life of Jesus Christ Himself as the ultimate example of obedience, even in the face of tremendous hardship and sacrifice. Join us as we journey through the Gospels to discover the transformative power of obedience to God's will. Until then, may your hearts be willing and your steps be guided by the grace of our Lord.

Remember, dear friends, to walk in obedience to our loving Father. And as always, let the Word of God be the lamp unto your feet and the light unto your path. Until we meet again, may God bless you and keep you. Shalom.
