A Word from the Vine No. 160: Embracing Perserverance - Overcoming the Fear of Failure

Welcome, dear friends, to another episode of "A Word from the Vine." I'm Pastor Loren Christensen of Danish Countryside Chapel. Today, I want to talk to you about a topic that has been weighing heavily on my heart—perseverance and the fear of failure. It seems that in our fast-paced, instant-gratification society, giving up has become all too easy. But when did it become okay to just throw up our hands in the fifth inning and say to heck with it? Is there no shame in failure anymore, beyond that of athletic prowess and entertainment? I wonder.

As followers of Christ, we are called to live lives that reflect the character of our Lord. We are called to be persistent, resilient, and unyielding in the face of challenges. And yet, the fear of failure often paralyzes us, preventing us from stepping out in faith and pursuing the dreams and purposes God has placed in our hearts.

But fear not, my friends, for God's Word has much to say about this very issue. In the book of Hebrews, chapter 12, verses 1 and 2, we read:

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." (Hebrews 12:1-2, ESV)

These verses remind us that we are not alone in our journey of faith. We have a cloud of witnesses who have gone before us, cheering us on from the grandstands of heaven. They faced their own trials and tribulations, yet they persevered. They did not let the fear of failure hold them back from running the race set before them.

And who better to look to as our ultimate example of perseverance than our Lord Jesus Christ? Despite the immense suffering and shame He endured on the cross, He pressed on, knowing that His sacrifice would bring eternal joy and redemption. He did not let failure define Him, but rather He embraced it as part of God's plan for our salvation.

So, my friends, I urge you to adopt a biblical perspective on failure. Do not let the fear of falling short paralyze you. Instead, let it fuel your determination to press on, to keep running the race with endurance. Set your eyes on the eternal prize, the joy that awaits us in the presence of our heavenly Father.

Remember the words of the apostle Paul in Philippians 3:13-14:

"But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:13-14, ESV)

Let go of the past, dear friends. Let go of the mistakes, the missed opportunities, and the perceived failures. They do not define you. Instead, fix your gaze on the hope and promise found in Christ. Strain forward, press on, and embrace perseverance.

Through God's strength, we can rise above our fear of failure. We can step out in faith, knowing that even if we stumble, He will be there to pick us up and guide us forward. Let us be a people who refuse to be deterred by setbacks, who refuse to let fear hold us captive.

May the Lord bless you and fill your hearts with courage and perseverance. May you rise above the fear of failure and embrace the calling that God has placed on your life. Until next time, remember to run the race with endurance, always looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.
