A Word from the Vine No. 167: Living in the World but Not of the World - A Call to Discipleship

Grace and peace be upon you, my beloved congregation. I welcome you back to "A Word from the Vine," where we delve into the eternal truths of God's Word. I'm Pastor Loren Christensen, and today, we embark on a journey of understanding what it means to live as disciples in a world filled with both good and evil.

In our previous episode, we explored the interconnectedness of God's eternal plan. Today, we build upon that foundation, focusing on the tension between our discipleship journey and the world we live in. Our anchor is Matthew 13:24-30, the parable of the wheat and the weeds. This parable offers us profound insights into the coexistence of good and evil in the world.

Let's dive into this parable. The master sows good seed, symbolizing the children of the Kingdom. But an enemy sows weeds among the wheat. This illustrates the reality that evil exists alongside good. As the wheat and weeds grow together, we see the challenge of distinguishing between them. This mirrors our journey as disciples, living amidst the complexities of a fallen world.

"Living in the world but not of the world" – this phrase encapsulates our calling. We are called to embrace the values of God's Kingdom while navigating the challenges of the world. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, Himself prayed for us in John 17:15-16, "I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one." As disciples, we are called to be a transforming presence in the world, illuminating it with the light of Christ.

But how can we do this? How can we stand strong amid the tension? Romans 8:18-27 offers us insight. Just as creation groans for redemption, we too experience struggles. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us, guiding us through weaknesses and doubts. We're reminded that God works all things for the good of those who love Him.

Dear friends, as we navigate this tension, remember that we are not alone. The Holy Spirit empowers us to rise above challenges. When we live according to God's Kingdom values, we become beacons of hope, pointing others to the light of Christ.

So, let us walk boldly in discipleship, fully aware of the complexities around us. Let us embrace the truth that though we are in the world, we are not of it. Our citizenship is in the Kingdom of Heaven. As we journey through life, let us strive to live as reflections of Christ's love and truth.

May the Holy Spirit strengthen us, reminding us of our purpose and hope. Let us be courageous disciples, standing firm in the face of adversity, and shining God's light into the darkness. Until we gather again, my dear friends, go forth with the assurance that you are not alone. May your lives resonate with the truth that you are called to live in the world but not of it. Peace be with you.
