A Word from the Vine No. 175: Facing the Storms of Life

Grace and peace to you from God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen. I'm Pastor Loren Christensen with Danish Countryside Chapel, and welcome to "A Word from the Vine." Today, let's dive into a story that resonates deeply with the challenges we encounter in our lives. It's the tale of Jesus walking on water, found in Matthew 14:22-33.

You see, my friends, life can often feel like crossing a tumultuous sea. The disciples themselves experienced this while sailing across the Sea of Galilee. The wind was against them, the waves were fierce, and fear gripped their hearts. Just as we face storms of doubt, fear, and uncertainty, they too were tossed about by life's tempests.

In Matthew 14:25, we read that shortly before dawn, Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. Now, imagine the disciples' surprise and terror at seeing someone walking on water. They thought it was a ghost! How often do we mistake God's presence in the midst of our trials for something else, something scary?

Peter, always the bold one, said, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water" (Matthew 14:28). And Jesus responded, "Come." Peter stepped out in faith, just as we do when we face challenges head-on, believing that with God's help, we can conquer the impossible.

But Peter's faith wavered. He looked at the storm around him, he doubted, and he began to sink. How relatable is that? We start with strong faith, but as difficulties persist, doubt creeps in, and we falter.

Yet, the beauty of this story lies in Jesus' response. He reached out His hand and caught Peter. You see, even in our moments of doubt and fear, God is right there, ready to rescue us. Just as He did for Peter, He extends His hand to us, offering salvation from the storms that threaten to overwhelm us.

Brothers and sisters, the storms of life are real. We face them every day. But just as the disciples found themselves in the boat with Jesus, we have the assurance that He is with us, even in the midst of the fiercest tempests. We need to trust in Him, even when our faith wavers.

Remember Matthew 14:31, when Jesus said to Peter, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" Jesus doesn't condemn us for our doubts. He lovingly calls us to trust Him, to hold onto faith even when the waves of doubt crash around us.

As we navigate the storms of life, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, just as Peter did initially. Let's learn from our moments of doubt and remember that God's hand is always there to catch us when we stumble. And when we emerge from the storms, just like the disciples who worshiped Jesus, we will find our faith strengthened and our hearts anchored in His love.

So, my friends, when you find yourself facing the storms of life, remember this story. Hold onto your faith, trust in the Lord, and know that He is there to guide you through the wind and the waves. May your faith be unwavering, and may you find peace in His presence, just as the disciples did that day on the Sea of Galilee.

May the Lord bless you and keep you. In Jesus' name, amen.
