A Word from the Vine No. 196: Honoring One Another

My dear friends, welcome back to "A Word from the Vine." I'm Pastor Loren Christensen. Today's message weighs heavy on my heart as we delve into a matter of great concern – the diminishing sense of honor in our society. It seems that in our fast-paced, self-centered world, values and principles are losing their place, and people are more focused on personal gain than on treating each other with respect and integrity. As we explore the importance of honor, let us turn to the Scriptures for guidance on how we can restore this vital virtue in our lives.

We find wisdom in Romans 12:10 , which tells us to "Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor." This verse highlights the profound significance of honoring and respecting each other, a principle that seems to be slipping away from us.

Let us begin by understanding what it means to honor one another. Honor isn't simply about being polite or courteous; it goes far deeper. It's about having a deep and abiding respect for one another, recognizing the worth of every individual as a creation of God. Honor acknowledges the inherent dignity in every person, regardless of their background, beliefs, or circumstances.

In the world we live in today, the fast pace and individualistic nature of society can lead us down a path where honor gets left behind. Many find themselves caught in a relentless pursuit of personal success, often forgetting the importance of showing honor to those around them. This erosion of honor can have devastating consequences, resulting in broken relationships, divided communities, and a moral compass that has lost its way.

So, how do we rekindle the flame of honor in our lives and communities? It starts with introspection and a commitment to change. We must make a conscious effort to treat every person we encounter with respect and kindness, regardless of our differences. Let us remember the words from Romans 12:10 – to outdo one another in showing honor.

Some practical steps that we can take to restore and strengthen honor in our lives are:

  • Practice Empathy: Take the time to understand the perspectives and experiences of others. Cultivate empathy for their joys and struggles.

  • Speak Words of Encouragement: Use your words to uplift and inspire those around you, recognizing their intrinsic worth.

  • Extend Forgiveness: Embrace the power of forgiveness as a means to heal wounds and rebuild relationships.

  • Serve Others: Selflessly serve your community and fellow believers, demonstrating honor through your actions.

  • Reflect on Scripture: Regularly turn to the Bible for guidance on how to honor one another, just as Christ has honored us.

My dear friends, the call to honor one another is not merely a suggestion; it is a command deeply rooted in the teachings of Christ. Let us heed this call, for by showing honor, we can rebuild stronger, more ethical communities. Together, we can rekindle the flame of honor in a world that yearns for the light of integrity and respect.

Thank you for joining me today.
