A Word from the Vine No. 209: The True Heart of Service

Welcome back, folks! Pastor Loren here, and I'm not slowing down one bit. We're on a mission to cut through the nonsense and deal with the "good person committee" that's lurking in our churches. Today, we're diving deeper into the heart of service, and believe me, there's a lot to say.

I want to start with a stern warning straight from the words of Jesus Himself. Listen up. It's Matthew 6:1-4:

"Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

Folks, I've seen it too many times—the grand displays of service for all to see, the loud proclamations of "look at me, look how good I am." But let me be crystal clear: that's not what service is about. If you're serving others just to get a pat on the back or some recognition, you're missing the point entirely.

Jesus couldn't have said it more plainly. If you're doing good deeds just to be seen by others, you've already received your reward. There's no heavenly reward waiting for you. Your heart needs to be in the right place when you serve.

Service, my friends, is about selflessness, compassion, and love. It's about helping those in need because you genuinely care, not because you want a gold star on your Christian report card. It's about being there for others, not for applause.

The key takeaway from this episode is this: the true heart of service is selflessness. It's about serving quietly, without fanfare, because it's the right thing to do. So let's drop the act, shall we? Let's serve with sincerity and love, just as Jesus taught us.

Join me in the next episode of "A Word from the Vine" as we continue our crusade against the "good person committee." It's time to serve from the heart, my friends, and leave the theatrics behind.
