A Word from the Vine No. 225: The Call to Repentance and Faith

Welcome back, dear friends, to the last episode of this short, three-part series of "A Word from the Vine." Today, we confront a critical message from the parable found in Matthew 21. It's a message about the call to repentance and faith – a call that resonates with urgency and relevance in our lives.

Our guiding scripture today is from Matthew 21:28-32, where Jesus declares, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you."

This parable of the two sons is a powerful reminder of the essence of genuine repentance and faith. In the story, we encounter two sons—one who initially refuses his father's command to work in the vineyard but later repents and obeys, and the other who verbally agrees but doesn't follow through with action.

Here's the heart of the matter: it's not enough to merely say yes to God; our actions must align with our words. The tax collectors and prostitutes, often considered the outcasts and the farthest from righteousness, grasped the importance of genuine repentance. They heard John the Baptist's call to repentance and responded. Their lives transformed as they embraced faith in God's forgiveness.

However, the religious leaders, despite their outward piety and eloquent words, failed to recognize their own need for repentance and faith. They were like the son who said yes but didn't follow through. Their self-righteousness blinded them to their own sinfulness.

So, what's the crucial message you need to remember from today's episode? It's this: Repentance and faith are not mere words or empty promises. They are transformative actions that align our hearts with God's will. The urgency of genuine repentance and faith cannot be overstated.

We must be like the tax collectors and prostitutes, recognizing our need for God's forgiveness and responding with a sincere desire to turn away from sin. It's not about where we start but where we finish on our spiritual journey.

In closing, I implore you to heed the call to repentance and faith. Don't be like the religious leaders who said yes but didn't change their ways. Instead, be like the tax collectors and prostitutes who, through genuine repentance and faith, found their place in the kingdom of God.

Thank you for joining me on this journey through "A Word from the Vine." May you carry this message of repentance and faith with you, allowing it to transform your life and draw you closer to our loving Creator. I'm Pastor Loren Christensen.
