A Word from the Vine No. 254: The Brevity of Life and Our Dependence on God

Well, hello there, dear friends. I'm Pastor Loren Christensen of Danish Countryside Chapel, and I'm thrilled to welcome you back to another installment of "A Word from the Vine." Today, we're about to take a deep dive into the timeless truths of Psalm 90, truths that lay bare the brevity of our existence and illuminate our absolute dependence on the Almighty.

Let's open our hearts and minds to the words of Psalm 90:1-6, shall we?

"Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth,or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You return man to dust and say, "Return, O children of man! For a thousand years in your sightare but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers."

Do you feel that, friends? The brevity of our days compared to the eternal nature of our Creator. The psalmist paints a vivid picture of the fleeting nature of human existence. It's like a breath, a passing shadow. A reminder that we are but dust.

Now, let me get personal with you. Life, my friends, is like a vapor. Here today, gone tomorrow. I've felt the weight of that reality, the stark truth that our days are numbered. And in that acknowledgment, there's a powerful invitation—an invitation to recognize our complete dependence on God.

In the hustle and bustle of life, it's easy to get caught up in the mundane, in the day-to-day grind. We forget, or perhaps we intentionally overlook, the eternal perspective. We're so busy chasing after the temporal that we neglect the profound reality of our human condition.

Life is transient, my friends, and humility is the gateway to understanding. The psalmist beckons us to reflect, to be humbled by the brevity of our existence. It's a call to pause, to contemplate, and to acknowledge our desperate need for something beyond ourselves.

Now, here comes the urgency, the call to action. We need to recognize, with urgency, that Jesus is the anchor of our souls. In a world filled with noise and distraction, we must intentionally shift our focus from the fleeting to the eternal. Our reliance should be on Christ, the source of wisdom, strength, and purpose.

Friends, there's no time to waste. The brevity of life should propel us into the arms of the Eternal. It's not a call to despair but an invitation to a life of purpose and dependence on the One who stands beyond time.

As we wrap up today's episode, I want to leave you with a challenge. Embrace your dependence on God. Seek His wisdom, His grace, and His guidance. In a world that constantly changes, He remains the constant. Let's journey together towards a life that echoes with the eternal, not just the temporal.

This is Pastor Loren, signing off with a prayer that your days may be filled with the awareness of God's abiding presence. Until next time, my friends.
