A Word from the Vine No. 360: Addressing Privilege - The Call to Accountability

Dear friends, welcome back to "A Word from the Vine." I am Pastor Loren Christensen, and tonight, we embark on a deeply introspective journey as we confront the issue of privilege and its profound implications for our lives and society.

Let us turn our attention to the book of James, chapter 2, verses 1-13, where we are admonished against showing partiality and favoritism based on wealth and status. The Word of God declares, and I paraphrase: my brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.

Privilege, my dear congregation, is a powerful force that permeates every aspect of our lives, often operating unseen and unchecked. Whether it be economic privilege, racial privilege, or social privilege, those who benefit from it must reckon with its implications and responsibilities.

Unchecked privilege can lead to the perpetuation of inequality and injustice, as those in positions of power may use their influence to maintain the status quo at the expense of others. It blinds us to the struggles of the marginalized and reinforces systems of oppression.

As followers of Christ, we are called to a higher standard of accountability when it comes to privilege. James reminds us that true religion is caring for the orphan and the widow and keeping oneself unstained by the world. We are called not just to acknowledge our privilege but to actively use it for the betterment of society.

We must be willing to examine our own hearts and actions, confronting any biases or prejudices that may lurk within. Instead of turning a blind eye to injustice, we are called to advocate for the voiceless and marginalized, using our privilege to uplift those who have been pushed to the margins of society.

Consider what we talked about under "Compassionate Stewardship" in the story of the Good Samaritan, who, despite societal norms and prejudices, extended compassion to a stranger in need. His example challenges us to overcome our own biases and privilege, reaching out to those who may be different from us.

Reflect also on the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, where the rich man's failure to use his wealth for the benefit of others resulted in dire consequences. Let us learn from his example and strive to be good stewards of the privilege entrusted to us.

As we conclude our discussion on addressing privilege, may we be spurred to action, using our influence and resources to advocate for justice and equality for all. Let us heed the words of James and strive to live lives of humility, compassion, and integrity in the service of others.

Thank you for joining me on this important journey of reflection and transformation. Until next time, may God's grace and peace be with you all.
