A Word from the Vine No. 385: Commanded to Love

Welcome, my dear friends, to the final installment of our short three part series on "Chosen by Love" on this, "A Word from the Vine." I'm Pastor Loren Christensen. Today, we will delve into the profound nature of Christ's commandment to love one another as He has loved us.

In John 15:12, our Lord declares,"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you." This is not merely a suggestion or an ideal to aspire to - it is a divine edict that lies at the very core of our identity as Christ's disciples.

Reflect on the extraordinary nature of the love that Jesus exemplifies - a love that defies human logic and extends even to those who stand against us. As Luke 6:27-28 instructs, "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you." This teaching challenges us to cultivate a love that is boundless, unconditional, and all-encompassing.

The early believers in the book of Acts provide a vivid illustration of this radical, communal love. Despite the hostility and persecution of the Roman Empire, they remained steadfast in their devotion to one another. Acts 2:44-45 paints a remarkable picture: "And all who believed were together and fhad all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need." This sacrificial lifestyle was a tangible testament to their love, firmly rooted in the example set by their Savior.

Now, let us consider the practical implications of Christ's command to love one another. It calls us to put aside our differences, to offer grace and forgiveness, and to consider the welfare of others before our own preferences. This caliber of love is truly transformative - it has the power to restore broken bonds, heal aching hearts, and unite disparate communities.

My friends, adherence to this commandment is not merely an obligation, but a joyful vocation that reshapes our very existence. As Galatians 6:2 exhorts us, "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." By supporting one another in love, we mirror the self-giving love of our Redeemer, who sacrificed His life for His companions.

Let us embrace this calling with fervent hearts, recognizing that the command to love one another is not a burdensome task, but a sacred privilege. May our lives be a reflection of Christ's boundless love, drawing others to the transformative power of His grace.

Until we meet again, may the Lord bless you and keep you, and may your love for one another be a testament to the world of the Savior's redeeming love. Amen.
