A Word from the Vine No. 400: Flames of Faith - Peter's Explanation

This is Pastor Loren Christensen of Danish Countryside Chapel, back with "A Word from the Vine," continuing our exploration of Pentecost. In the midst of bewilderment and accusation, a voice of clarity and authority rises. Peter stands, bolstered by the Spirit, to address the crowd. The Scripture in Acts 2:14-21 reveals his words:

"But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: 'Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: "And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.'"

Peter's defense is not merely a rebuttal of the mockers' claims; it is a proclamation of the fulfillment of prophecy. He invokes the words of Joel, affirming that what they witness is the promised outpouring of the Spirit, not the result of wine.

This outpouring is not limited by age, gender, or status; it is a gift for all who follow Christ. It is accompanied by signs and wonders, pointing to the coming day of the Lord—a day of salvation for those who call upon His name.

As we reflect on Peter's explanation, let us be reminded of the inclusivity of God's promise, the power of His Spirit, and the hope of His coming kingdom. May we, too, be bold in our witness, steadfast in our faith, and eager for the work of the Spirit in our lives.
