A Word from the Vine No. 418: God’s Plumb Line - A Measure of Righteousness

Welcome to “A Word from the Vine.” I'm Pastor Loren Christensen of Danish Countryside Chapel. Today, we will explore the vision of the plumb line from Amos 7:7-9 and its significance in our lives.

Please open your Bibles to Amos 7:7-9: “This is what he showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. And the Lord said to me, ‘Amos, what do you see?’ And I said, ‘A plumb line.’ Then the Lord said, ‘Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass by them; the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.’”

The plumb line is a tool used by builders to ensure structures are perfectly vertical. In this vision, it symbolizes God’s standard of righteousness and justice. Just as a builder uses a plumb line to measure the straightness of a wall, God uses His divine standard to measure the faithfulness and integrity of His people. The vision indicates that God is assessing Israel and finding them wanting.

How do we measure up to God’s plumb line in our lives? Each of us must take a moment to reflect on our own lives. Are we living in a way that aligns with God’s standards? Are there areas where we fall short? This self-examination is not meant to condemn us but to guide us towards repentance and realignment with God’s will.

Aligning our lives with God’s standards is crucial. It means striving to live in a way that reflects His righteousness and justice. It involves making choices that honor God and demonstrate His love and fairness to others. When we align our lives with God’s plumb line, we become instruments of His peace and justice in the world.

Let us strive to live according to God’s plumb line, embodying His righteousness and justice in all we do.
