A Word from the Vine No. 428: Practical Steps to Cultivate Gratitude

Welcome to the final episode of this short, 5-part series on "A Word from the Vine." I'm Pastor Loren Christensen of Danish Countryside Chapel in Exira, Iowa. Today, we focus on practical steps to cultivate gratitude, shifting from worry to a heart of thankfulness. Jesus' teaching in Matthew 6:25-34 reminds us not to be anxious about our lives but to trust in God's provision.

Please open your bibles to this passage and read it along with me:

"Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."

Jesus says, "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?" He encourages us to look at the birds of the air and the lilies of the field, which are cared for by our Heavenly Father. If God provides for them, how much more will He provide for us, His children?

One practical step to cultivate gratitude is to start a gratitude journal. Each day, write down three things you are thankful for. This simple practice can help shift your focus from worries to blessings. By acknowledging the good in our lives, we become more aware of God's provision and care.

Prayer is another powerful tool. Begin your prayers with thanksgiving, acknowledging God's goodness and faithfulness. This sets a positive tone and helps you approach God with a grateful heart. Jesus teaches us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to us. When we prioritize our relationship with God, we find that our needs are met, and our worries diminish.

Acts of kindness can also cultivate gratitude. When we serve others, we become more aware of our own blessings and the joy of giving. Look for opportunities to bless others, whether through a kind word, a helping hand, or a thoughtful gesture. These acts not only benefit others but also remind us of the abundance in our own lives.

I've heard many testimonials of how these practices have transformed lives. One person shared how starting a gratitude journal helped them overcome anxiety and find peace. Another found that beginning each day with a prayer of thanksgiving brought a sense of joy and contentment. These stories remind us that gratitude is a powerful tool for transforming our hearts and minds.

Friends, let's embrace these practical steps to cultivate gratitude, trusting in God's provision and experiencing His peace. May our hearts overflow with thankfulness, and may we find joy in recognizing and sharing God's blessings.

Thank you for joining me on "A Word from the Vine." God bless you.
