A Word from the Vine No. 43: The Question of Death in Plato's "The Republic" and the Bible

Good day to you, I'm Pastor Loren Christensen. As we continue our exploration of Plato's "Republic" and how it relates to the Bible, today we turn our attention to the topic of death. For Plato, death is a release from the physical world and a return to the realm of the forms, where the soul can be purified and perfected. But what does the Bible have to say about death?

In the Old Testament, death is often portrayed as a punishment for sin. In Genesis, God warns Adam and Eve that if they eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they will surely die. And throughout the Old Testament, we see examples of death as a consequence of disobedience to God's commands.

However, in the New Testament, we see a different perspective on death. Jesus himself experienced death, and through his resurrection, he overcame it. In John 11:25-26, Jesus tells Martha, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die."

The apostle Paul also speaks about death in a transformative way, saying in 1 Corinthians 15:51-52, "Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed - in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed."

So while Plato sees death as a release from the physical world, the Bible presents a different perspective. Death is not the end, but rather a transition to a new life in Christ. As Christians, we can take comfort in knowing that death is not something to be feared, but rather a stepping stone on our journey towards eternal life.

Let us pray:

Dear God, we thank you for the hope and comfort that we find in your promises regarding death. Help us to trust in your plan and to live our lives in light of the eternal hope that we have in Christ. Amen.
