A Word from the Vine No. 431: Jesus, the Bread of Life

Welcome back to another episode of "A Word from the Vine." I’m Pastor Loren Christensen, and today we’re diving into one of the most profound statements Jesus made about Himself: "I am the bread of life." Our reading for today comes from John 6:35.

"Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.'"

When Jesus declares, "I am the bread of life," He is making a statement of immense significance. This declaration is one of the seven "I am" statements found in the Gospel of John, where Jesus reveals His divine nature and mission. By calling Himself the bread of life, Jesus is identifying Himself as essential for spiritual sustenance and eternal life.

Let’s consider the role of bread in our daily lives. Bread has been a staple food across cultures for centuries. It is a basic, essential part of our diet, providing the necessary nutrients and energy we need to function each day. For many of us, especially in a farming community, the process of growing wheat, harvesting it, and turning it into bread is a familiar cycle. We understand the importance of bread for physical sustenance.

In the same way that bread is essential for physical sustenance, Jesus is essential for our spiritual sustenance. Just as bread provides nourishment and strength for our bodies, Jesus provides nourishment and strength for our souls. He is not just an addition to our spiritual diet; He is the core of it. Without Him, we cannot experience the fullness of spiritual life.

When Jesus says, "whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst," He is offering a promise of complete and eternal satisfaction. Physical bread can only temporarily satisfy our hunger, but Jesus offers a satisfaction that endures forever. This promise speaks to our deepest spiritual needs and longings. By coming to Jesus and believing in Him, we find the true fulfillment that nothing else in this world can provide.

Just as bread is central to our physical diet, Jesus must be central to our spiritual lives. He should be the foundation upon which we build everything else. By prioritizing our relationship with Him, we allow His presence to strengthen and nourish our souls.

Reflect on how integral bread is to your daily meals. Without it, your diet would feel incomplete, and your body would lack the necessary sustenance. In the same way, our spiritual lives are incomplete without Jesus. He is the bread of life that sustains us through every challenge and season.

As we meditate on Jesus’ declaration, "I am the bread of life," let’s commit to making Him the center of our spiritual lives. By coming to Him daily and believing in His promise, we receive the strength and nourishment our souls need to thrive.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for sending Jesus, the bread of life. Help us to understand the significance of His presence in our lives and to seek Him daily for our spiritual nourishment. May we rely on His strength and be sustained by His love and grace. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Thank you for joining me on "A Word from the Vine." I look forward to continuing our journey together as we explore more about Jesus, the bread of life. God bless you.
