A Word from the Vine No. 438: Stop Bitterness and Start Loving Like Christ

Welcome to the final episode of our short, five-part series on “A Word from the Vine.” I'm Pastor Loren Christensen. Over the past episodes, we’ve discussed living in truth, managing anger, working honestly, and using our words to build up. Today, we conclude by addressing a critical aspect of our spiritual journey: letting go of bitterness and embracing Christ-like love.

Bitterness and unforgiveness can poison our hearts and hinder our relationship with God. Ephesians 4:31-32 instructs us to “let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Holding onto grudges and harboring malice not only affects our spiritual health but also our relationships with others.

The Bible commands us to forgive and let go of all forms of malice. Forgiveness is not optional for believers; it is a mandate. Just as God in Christ forgave us, we are called to extend that same grace to others. Letting go of bitterness and choosing kindness and compassion reflects the heart of Christ and fosters unity within the body of Christ.

I encourage you to reflect on any grudges or bitterness you may be holding onto. Are there people in your life you need to forgive? Holding onto bitterness only harms you and grieves the Holy Spirit. Release these burdens in light of Christ’s forgiveness. Remember, forgiveness is a powerful act of love that frees both the giver and the receiver.

Here are some practical steps to help you forgive others and cultivate a heart of kindness and compassion:

  • Pray for a Forgiving Heart: Ask God to help you forgive those who have wronged you. Pray for the strength to let go of bitterness and embrace love.

  • Reflect on Christ’s Forgiveness: Meditate on the forgiveness you have received through Christ. Let this inspire you to extend the same grace to others.

  • Take Action: Reach out to those you need to forgive. Have honest conversations and seek reconciliation.

  • Practice Kindness: Make a conscious effort to be kind and tenderhearted in your interactions. Small acts of kindness can have a profound impact.

  • Let Go of Malice: Consciously choose to put away all forms of malice. Replace negative thoughts and actions with positive, loving ones.

As we conclude this series, remember that living out these principles—truth, righteous anger, honest work, edifying speech, and Christ-like love—will transform our lives and our communities. Together, we can reflect the heart of God’s kingdom and be a light in the world.

Thank you for joining me on this journey through “A Word from the Vine.” Let’s commit to stop bitterness and start loving like Christ, embodying His love and forgiveness in all we do. God bless you.
