A Word from the Vine No. 445: The Healing of the Deaf Man

Hello, dear friends! Welcome back to "A Word from the Vine." I’m Pastor Loren Christensen. In our last episode, we discussed the bold faith of the Syrophoenician woman. Today, we continue our series on "Faith Beyond Boundaries" by looking at the healing of the deaf man in Mark 7:31-37.

Jesus travels through the Decapolis region, another predominantly Gentile area. Here, some people bring to Him a man who is deaf and has a speech impediment. They beg Jesus to lay His hand on him.

Jesus takes the man aside, away from the crowd. This act alone shows Jesus’ compassion and personal care. He puts His fingers into the man’s ears, spits, and touches the man’s tongue. Then, looking up to heaven, He sighs and says, "Ephphatha," which means "Be opened." Immediately, the man’s ears are opened, his tongue is released, and he speaks plainly.”

The crowd is astonished beyond measure. They proclaim, "He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak." Despite Jesus’ instruction to tell no one, the news spreads rapidly.

Jesus’ actions are deeply personal and intimate. He meets the man in his need and brings complete healing. How often do we recognize Jesus’ personal care in our own lives? Do we share our testimonies of His work with others? This miracle reminds us of the power of Jesus to heal and transform lives. Let’s be encouraged to share our stories of His goodness and to trust in His personal care for each of us.

Thank you for joining me today. In our next episode, we will connect these two miracles and explore how faith can transcend all boundaries. Reflect on Jesus’ personal care in your life and consider sharing your testimony with others.
