A Word from the Vine No. 448: Popularity vs. Purpose

Hello, my friends, and welcome to “A Word from the Vine.” I’m Pastor Loren Christensen, and today we’re exploring a theme that is particularly relevant in our modern world: prioritizing purpose over popularity. In a society that often values fame and approval, it’s crucial for us to remember the higher calling that God has placed on our lives.

Turn with me to our key scripture for today, Mark 8:27-30:

And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" And they told him, "John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets." And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Christ." And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

In this passage, we see Jesus and His disciples traveling to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way, Jesus asks His disciples a crucial question: “Who do people say that I am?” The responses vary—some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others, one of the prophets. But then Jesus asks a more personal question: “But who do you say that I am?” Peter responds with a profound declaration, “You are the Christ.”

Jesus’ mission included phases of popularity. Crowds followed Him, marveled at His teachings, and witnessed His miracles. However, Jesus knew that His ultimate purpose required sacrifice. He did not let the allure of popularity deter Him from fulfilling God’s plan. He remained focused on His mission, even when it meant facing rejection, suffering, and death on the cross.

Let me share a brief story of someone who chose purpose over popularity. Consider the life of St. Boniface, an English missionary who played a crucial role in the Christianization of Germany in the 8th century. Boniface, originally named Winfrid, left his homeland to spread the Gospel in the pagan regions of Germany. Despite facing significant opposition and danger, including the destruction of sacred pagan trees and temples, Boniface remained steadfast in his mission. His dedication to his purpose over the allure of safety and approval led to the establishment of a strong Christian presence in Germany. Boniface’s unwavering commitment to his mission, even at the cost of his life, serves as a powerful example for us all.

I want to encourage each of you to focus on your God-given purpose rather than seeking approval from others. It can be tempting to chase after popularity and the validation of the world, but our true calling lies in fulfilling the mission God has set before us. Let us follow Jesus’ example, staying committed to our purpose even when it requires sacrifice.

Thank you for joining me today on “A Word from the Vine.” Stay tuned for our next episode, where we will continue to explore the themes of discipleship and commitment. Until then, may God bless you and guide you in your mission.
