A Word from the Vine No. 452: The Golden Rule in Major Religions - Judaism

“What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. This is the whole Torah; all the rest is commentary.” (Hillel, Talmud, Shabbath 31a)

Welcome back to "A Word from the Vine." I'm Pastor Loren Christensen. Friends, next in our series on the universality of the Golden Rule is Judaism, so let’s turn our attention to the wisdom of Rabbi Hillel, a revered Jewish sage, who succinctly captures the essence of the Torah with these words: "What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor." This teaching, found in the Talmud, emphasizes the centrality of the Golden Rule in Jewish ethics.

Rabbi Hillel’s statement is profound in its simplicity. He tells us that the entire Torah—the body of Jewish law and teachings—can be distilled into this one principle. Everything else, he says, is commentary. This underscores just how fundamental the Golden Rule is to Jewish thought and practice.

In Judaism, this principle is not just a guideline for personal behavior; it is a commandment that shapes the entire community. It calls for a deep sense of empathy and justice. It asks us to consider the impact of our actions on others and to refrain from doing anything that would cause them harm or distress.

Imagine a society where everyone lived by this rule. There would be no room for hatred, prejudice, or injustice. Instead, there would be mutual respect, kindness, and understanding. This is the vision that Rabbi Hillel presents to us—a vision of a world where people treat each other with the same care and consideration that they desire for themselves.

In our own lives, we can apply this teaching in many ways. It might mean standing up against bullying or discrimination, offering support to someone in need, or simply being mindful of how our words and actions affect those around us. It is about creating a community where everyone feels valued and respected.

As we reflect on this teaching, let us be inspired to live out the Golden Rule in our interactions with others. Let us strive to build a world where empathy and compassion are at the heart of all we do.
