A Word from the Vine No. 454: The Golden Rule in Major Religions - Hinduism

“This is the sum of duty: do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you.” (Mahabharata 5:1517)

Beloved congregation, I'm Pastor Loren, and this is "A Word from the Vine," where we are taking a look at the universality of the Golden Rule in the major religions of the worlds. Next up, we shall explore the wisdom found in Hinduism, where the Golden Rule is beautifully articulated in the Mahabharata: "This is the sum of duty: do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you." This ancient text highlights the ethical duty of non-harm, or "ahimsa," which is a cornerstone of Hindu moral teachings.

In Hinduism, the concept of "dharma" refers to the moral and ethical duties that each individual must follow. The Mahabharata succinctly captures this by emphasizing that our duty is to avoid causing pain to others. This principle of non-harm is not just about refraining from physical violence; it extends to our words, thoughts, and actions.

The idea is simple yet profound: if an action would cause us pain, we should not inflict that pain on others. This teaching encourages us to cultivate empathy and compassion, to put ourselves in the shoes of others, and to act in ways that promote peace and harmony.

In our daily lives, practicing this principle might mean speaking kindly to others, being considerate of their feelings, and avoiding actions that could cause harm or distress. It calls us to be mindful of the impact of our behavior on those around us and to strive to create a positive and nurturing environment.

The principle of non-harm also extends to all living beings, reflecting the Hindu belief in the interconnectedness of all life. This is why many Hindus practice vegetarianism and advocate for the protection of animals and the environment. It is a holistic approach to living that seeks to minimize suffering and promote well-being for all.

As we reflect on this teaching from the Mahabharata, let us be inspired to embrace the ethical duty of non-harm in our own lives. Let us strive to act with kindness and compassion, creating a world where everyone can live free from pain and suffering.
