A Word from the Vine No. 60: Leaving a Church - How to Do It with Grace and Wisdom

As Christians, we believe that the church is not a building, but the body of Christ made up of believers. We are called to be part of a community of faith where we can worship, grow, and serve together. However, there may come a time when we feel that it is no longer possible to continue being part of a particular congregation. In this episode of "A Word from the Vine," we will explore how to leave a church with grace and wisdom.

The decision to leave a church should never be taken lightly. It is important to prayerfully consider the reasons why you are considering leaving and seek wise counsel from trusted leaders and friends. As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, "For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many."

Once you have prayerfully considered your decision, it is important to communicate it with grace and honesty. This means having a respectful conversation with your pastor or church leaders, sharing your reasons for leaving and expressing gratitude for the time you spent there. As Paul wrote in Ephesians 4:15, "Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ."

It is also important to be mindful of how you leave. Don't burn bridges or create unnecessary conflict. As Christians, we are called to live at peace with others as much as it depends on us (Romans 12:18). This means leaving in a way that is respectful and kind, even if others do not respond in the same way.

If you are considering leaving a church, it may be tempting to try to bring like-minded individuals with you. However, it is important to be cautious and considerate in doing so. As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 3:3-4, "For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? For when one says, 'I follow Paul,' and another, 'I follow Apollos,' are you not being merely human?"

Instead of trying to recruit others to your cause, focus on finding a new church home where you can grow in your faith and serve alongside other believers. As Hebrews 10:25 reminds us, "Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."

In conclusion, leaving a church can be a difficult decision, but it is important to do so with grace and wisdom. Seek counsel from God and trusted friends, communicate with honesty and kindness, and focus on finding a new church home where you can continue to grow and serve. As Paul wrote in Philippians 3:14, "I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."
