A Word from the Vine No. 61: Leading by Example - How to Make a Difference in a Troubled Church

Welcome to "A Word from the Vine." In our last episode, we discussed the challenges of dealing with poor leadership in a church community. But what if you've decided to stay and try to make a difference? How can you lead by example and help turn things around? Today, we'll explore some practical steps you can take to be a positive influence in a troubled church.

First and foremost, it's important to remember that as a member of the church community, you have a responsibility to serve others. Philippians 2:3-4 reminds us to "do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others." This means looking for opportunities to serve those in need, whether it's through volunteering, offering support, or simply being there to listen.

Secondly, it's important to cultivate positive relationships with other members of the church community. Proverbs 17:17 says "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity." By building strong relationships with others in the church, you can help create a sense of unity and support that can be a powerful force for change.

Thirdly, take an active role in your church's leadership, even if you are not officially in a leadership position. Offer your ideas and opinions in a constructive manner, and be willing to listen to the ideas of others. In 1 Peter 5:2-3, we are called to "shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock." By being a positive influence in the leadership of your church, you can help shape the direction of the community in a positive way.

Lastly, remember to pray for your church leaders and the entire congregation. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 encourages us to "pray for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way." Pray for wisdom, guidance, and the Holy Spirit to work in the hearts and minds of those in leadership positions and the congregation as a whole.

In conclusion, while it can be difficult to remain in a church community with poor leadership, there are ways you can lead by example and make a positive difference. Remember to serve others, cultivate positive relationships, take an active role in leadership, and pray for the entire community. Let us be the change we wish to see in our church and in the world. I'm Pastor Loren Christensen of Danish Countryside Chapel.
