A Word from the Vine No. 65: Benevolent Giving - Supporting the Struggling Rural Churches

Welcome to another episode of "A Word from the Vine." I'm Pastor Loren, and today we are going to explore the beautiful concept of benevolent giving and its significance in supporting struggling rural churches.

In our Lutheran tradition, we are called to embody the teachings of Jesus and demonstrate the love and compassion that he showed during his ministry. One essential aspect of this is extending our support to those churches that are facing challenges in rural areas.

The book of Acts provides us with a remarkable example of the early Christian community. In Acts 2:44-45, we read, "All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need." This passage highlights the spirit of generosity and solidarity that characterized the early believers.

Just as the early Christians shared their resources and supported one another, we too have a responsibility to care for our brothers and sisters in Christ. This means recognizing the struggles faced by rural churches and extending a helping hand.

Unfortunately, in our modern world, there can sometimes be a prevailing mindset of "bigger is better." Larger churches and denominations may be tempted to invest their resources in building grandiose facilities or expanding their own ministries, often overlooking the needs of smaller churches in rural areas.

But this is not the spirit of Christ. Our faith calls us to humility, compassion, and stewardship. In 2 Corinthians 8:13-15, the apostle Paul writes, "Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. At the present time, your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality."

These powerful words remind us of our interconnectedness as the body of Christ. Supporting struggling rural churches is not a matter of charity or remote assistance, but rather an expression of our unity and shared mission. It is an opportunity for us to witness the love of Christ by providing resources, guidance, and encouragement.

So, my dear friends, let us challenge the prevailing mindset of "bigger is better" and instead embrace the spirit of benevolent giving. Let us extend our hands to the struggling rural churches, not with a sense of superiority or competition, but with genuine love and solidarity.

Together, we can create a thriving Lutheran community that uplifts all its members, regardless of their location or size. Let us remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 25:40, "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."

Thank you for joining me on this episode of "A Word from the Vine." May we all be inspired to practice benevolent giving and support our struggling rural churches, for in doing so, we reflect the heart of Christ. God bless you all.
