A Word from the Vine No. 66: Challenging the Bigger Better Mentality with Humility and Stewardship

Welcome back to "A Word from the Vine." I'm Pastor Loren Christensen of Danish Countryside Chapel, and today we continue our discussion on an important topic: challenging the "bigger better" mentality within churches and denominations.

In our modern society, it is all too common to measure success by the size of our facilities, the number of attendees, or the scope of our ministries. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to a different standard—a standard of humility and responsible stewardship.

The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Philippians, provides us with a powerful reminder. In Philippians 2:3-4, he writes, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."

These words challenge us to examine our motives and intentions. Are we driven by a desire to promote ourselves, our own church, or our denomination at the expense of others? Or do we genuinely seek the well-being of the entire body of Christ, including those struggling in rural areas?

It is crucial for us to understand that our success as churches should not be measured solely by the size of our buildings or the numbers on our attendance sheets. Rather, it is measured by the impact we have on people's lives, the love we extend to others, and the responsible stewardship of the resources entrusted to us.

Jesus himself taught us the importance of wise stewardship in the parable of the dishonest manager found in Luke 16:10. He said, "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much."

These words remind us that how we handle our resources, whether they be small or great, reflects our character and faithfulness. It is our duty to use what we have been given wisely and for the betterment of the entire body of Christ.

So, my dear brothers and sisters, let us challenge the prevailing "bigger better" mentality and instead embrace a mindset of humility and responsible stewardship. Rather than seeking to outdo one another, let us support and uplift those struggling in rural areas.

Together, we can create a culture of genuine love, unity, and support within the body of Christ. Let us prioritize the well-being of others above our own interests, using our resources wisely to support and strengthen struggling rural churches.

Thank you for joining me on this episode of "A Word from the Vine." May we all be inspired to challenge the prevailing mindset, fostering a culture of humility, and responsible stewardship within our churches and denominations. May the Lord bless you and keep you.
