A Word from the Vine No. 91: True Discipleship - Moving Beyond Pragmatism

Welcome back, dear friends, to another enlightening episode of "A Word from the Vine." I'm Pastor Loren, and today we delve into the topic of true discipleship and moving beyond pragmatism in our faith journey.

In our world today, it is not uncommon for some to view Christianity as a pragmatic choice—an insurance policy against the uncertainty of life and death. But is this truly the essence of discipleship? Is following Jesus simply a means to an end?

In Matthew 16:24-26, Jesus challenges us with these profound words: 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?'

Jesus calls us to a radical form of discipleship—one that goes beyond mere pragmatism. He invites us to deny ourselves, to surrender our own desires and ambitions, and to take up our cross. This is not a call to physical martyrdom, but a call to live a life of selflessness, sacrifice, and devotion to Him.

Pragmatic faith, which views Christianity as a transactional arrangement for personal gain, misses the heart of true discipleship. It fails to embrace the transformative power of Christ's love and grace in our lives. It reduces our relationship with Jesus to a superficial transaction rather than a deep and meaningful connection with our Lord and Savior.

Being a Christian is not about joining a social club or finding security in the face of death. It is about repentance, true discipleship, and a sincere desire to follow Jesus with all our hearts, minds, and souls.

Genuine repentance involves recognizing our need for a Savior, acknowledging our own brokenness and sinfulness, and turning away from a self-centered life. It is a humble and contrite heart that seeks forgiveness and seeks to live according to God's will.

As we aspire to true discipleship, we must prioritize a Christ-centered perspective. It is not about what we can gain or achieve, but about aligning our lives with the teachings and example of Jesus. It is about living out the values of the Kingdom of God—love, compassion, justice, and mercy—in every aspect of our lives.

Let us remember that Jesus is not just an example or a moral teacher, but the Son of God who offers us abundant life and eternal salvation. Our faith in Him should go beyond pragmatism and be rooted in a deep love and devotion to our Savior.

In our next episode, the last of this series, titled 'The Heart of True Prosperity: Embracing Generosity and Compassion,' we will explore the proper perspective on wealth and prosperity, the call to care for the marginalized and excluded, and the importance of living a life of generosity and compassion.

May the Holy Spirit guide us as we seek to move beyond pragmatism and embrace true discipleship. May our hearts be filled with love for Christ and a genuine desire to follow Him with all that we are. Amen.
